WHAT DOES YOUR MORNING ROUTINE CONSIST OF?
I’m a night owl, so I like to have a ‘slow’ morning and get up around 8:00, check the NY Post app to see what’s going on in the world and the city. Then it’s coffee; Italian roast with a splash of half & half and a scoop of Vital Proteins Collagen. I take B12 drops to get my energy up & take my probiotic and apple cider vinegar. After that, I’ll check my emails – I really try not to take calls or meetings before noon, it gives me time to check things off of my to-do list first thing, which makes me feel like my day is off to a productive start.
WHAT IS THE BEST PART OF OWNING YOUR OWN BUSINESS?
Hands down, the best part of owning a business is the confidence that comes with being able to problem solve. I try to be very solution-oriented, so I love the challenge of making something that ‘doesn’t work’, work. It’s so empowering to figure shit out! The fact that I can work from anywhere is also a major perk.
WHAT IS THE MOST CHALLENGING PART OF OWNING YOUR OWN BUSINESS?
The most difficult part is that there aren’t many people who can relate to being a business owner and what that means on a day-to-day. Being an entrepreneur can be somewhat isolating, in that you don’t ever really feel like you can explain what you actually do – its so extensive and there are so many factors that unless you’re speaking to someone who is already on your same page, it can feel like a waste of time and energy.
WHAT IS THE MOST IMPORTANT THING TO INVEST IN WHEN STARTING A BUSINESS?
There are three things that I think are so important to invest in right away, in this order:
1.Registering your business (you can do this easily with LegalZoom)
2.Ordering business cards, giving people a way to contact you easily is key and handing out a card is professional. (I love Moo)
3.Getting a website up – it doesn’t have to be anything fancy, but something where people can find you easily, where you can explain what you do, and where you can establish your brand aesthetic. (Need a site? Book a free consultation here)
WHAT IS SOMETHING THAT YOU DO FOR YOURSELF EVERYDAY?
I love listening to podcasts and will choose one to listen to while I take a shower. I diffuse the bathroom with peppermint and eucalyptus essential oils to wind down and clear my head. Most nights I'll have a good glass of wine with dinner.
WHAT’S YOUR GREATEST MOTIVATION?
My greatest motivation is that I have such a clear vision of the future – I know exactly where I’m going to be in 5 years, 10 years, etc. I don’t always know how I’m going to get there, but I do a lot of manifesting and so far, everything that I’m doing right now is where I knew I’d be since I was a kid; owning a business, living in Manhattan, the list goes on.
WHAT IS THE BEST PIECE OF BUSINESS ADVICE THAT YOU’VE EVER GOTTEN?
Put your head down and run your own race – comparison is the thief of joy.
WHAT IS THE BEST BUSINESS ADVICE THAT YOU’VE EVER GIVEN?
Be kind to people, manage your expectations, work your ass off & stay on brand.
HOW DO YOU STAY FOCUSED/PRODUCTIVE AND MAKE THE BEST OF THE SAME 24 HOURS THAT EVERYONE ELSE HAS?
It’s easy for me to focus because this is what I want to be focused on. That said, I use tools like the 5 Second Rule and time-blocking to stay on track and not procrastinate. I also turn ALL of my phone notifications off, social media, text messages, etc.
WHO DO YOU LOOK UP TO/FOLLOW ON SOCIAL MEDIA/USE AS A MENTOR?
Gary Vaynerchuk (@garyvee) is a digital-age genius and an entrepreneurial force - his book Crush It has changed my perspective on so many things. Bethenny Frankel (@bethennyfrankel) has done an unbelievable job of being in 100 different lanes while still staying on-brand, which is hard so to do. Sara Blakely (@sarablakely), the founder of SPANX, has an amazing story and just a great, really positive outlook on life and business. I also love Lewis Howes (@lewishowes), Lauryn Evarts (@theskinnyconfidential) & Mel Robbins (@melrobbinslive).
WHAT DOES NO ONE TELL YOU ABOUT BEING AN ENTREPRENEUR?
That there are so many failures before the success comes.
