We people talking about it, we see a flood of memes about it, we may even feel it...but what actually is mercury retrograde, other than something to blame our bad days on?
Simply put, mercury retrograde occurs when the planet, mercury, passes the earth and slows down. While mercury doesn’t actually orbit backwards, it appears to as it rounds earth and thus why it’s called, ‘retrograde’. This only happens 3-4 times a year, but when it does, it seems likes everyone falls apart – am I right?
In astrology, mercury rules communication, technology & travel so these are the areas we see more affected by retrograde. While I understand the skepticism that some people have regarding astrology, I’m not quite sure how anyone can deny that the sun, the moon & the planets rule the universe. If the moon controls 300 + million miles of ocean tide and the sun gives energy to the plants that provide our only oxygen source, then doesn’t it make sense that when a planet is out of whack, we are most likely to be also?
That said, mercury retrograde can throw us for a loop; here’s how to move through the madness with a clear head and as little frustration as possible.
As mercury slows down, it pulls us to slow down as well … and it can’t be stopped. The sooner you stop fighting the need to take it easier, relax and cool down, the better you’ll feel. It’s okay to surrender to rest – the upside of mercury retrograde is that it usually comes at the exact right time. Chill out and enjoy.
THE BLAME GAME
Yes, your phone might be glitching, your plane might be delayed, and you and your spouse might be arguing more than usual, but you can’t use mercury retrograde as an excuse for losing your shit. Part of knowing about retrograde is knowing that things might go wrong, but that you still have full control over your reactions. Keep calm as you face daily challenges.
DON’T SIGN ANYTHING
During this time of retrograde, since communication is affected so greatly, it’s better to hold off on signing contracts/agreements/negotiations. Avoid any chance of miscommunication becoming a bigger issue down the road and wait the extra few days, it’s worth it in the long run.
TECH – NO
Again, since mercury rules technology, you’ll want to wait until post-retrograde to purchase any electronics. Trust.
PATIENCE IS A VIRTUE
Mercury retrograde will most likely test you in more ways than one, the key is to move through it with patience. Slow down if necessary; take advantage of your phone not receiving texts or your TV not working, take care of yourself if you aren’t feeling 100% and rest assured, that it will be over soon – you got this.
